How We Install the Jandy TruClear XL Salt Chlorinator

Looking to enjoy crystal-clear pool water without the hassle of traditional chlorine? At Oasis Lighting Design, we recently installed a Jandy TruClear XL Salt Chlorinator for a residential client—and here’s a quick breakdown of how it works and how we install it professionally.

What Is a Salt Chlorinator?

The Jandy TruClear XL is a powerful salt chlorinator that turns ordinary salt into pure chlorine, keeping your pool water clean and safe—without the harsh chemical feel. It’s ideal for pools up to 45,000 gallons and automatically produces chlorine as your system runs.

What You’ll Need

Before we begin installation, we always ensure the following:

  • Proper salt level: 3000 ppm minimum
  • Clean, balanced pool water (tested for pH, calcium, stabilizer, etc.)
  • A horizontal 2” or 2.5” return line section, at least 16" long

Installation Steps

1. Water Chemistry First

We test and balance the water—checking calcium hardness, pH, stabilizer (CYA), and salt levels. Poor water chemistry can ruin the system and void your warranty.

2. Pipe Prep

We select a straight, horizontal pipe section after all pool equipment (filter, heater, etc.), then cut a 14.5” gap for the chlorinator cell.

3. Install the Cell

The cell is cemented in place with union fittings and aligned with the correct flow direction. We ensure no leaks and let the cement dry completely.

4. Electrical Setup

Our licensed team wires the TruClear XL to a GFCI-protected breaker and bonds it to your existing pool equipment ground. It’s always interlocked with the pool pump—so it only runs when water is flowing.

5. Salt Addition

If needed, we add high-purity, non-iodized salt (≥99.8% NaCl) directly into the pool—not through the skimmer—and circulate the system for even mixing.

6. Startup & Configuration

Once salinity is confirmed, we power on the chlorinator, set the chlorine output (typically 40–60%), and educate you on how to monitor and maintain it weekly.
