How We Install the Jandy TruClear XL Salt Chlorinator
Looking to enjoy crystal-clear pool water without the hassle of traditional chlorine? At Oasis Lighting Design, we recently installed a Jandy TruClear XL Salt Chlorinator for a residential client—and here’s a quick breakdown of how it works and how we install it professionally.
What Is a Salt Chlorinator?
The Jandy TruClear XL is a powerful salt chlorinator that turns ordinary salt into pure chlorine, keeping your pool water clean and safe—without the harsh chemical feel. It’s ideal for pools up to 45,000 gallons and automatically produces chlorine as your system runs.
What You’ll Need
Before we begin installation, we always ensure the following:
- Proper salt level: 3000 ppm minimum
- Clean, balanced pool water (tested for pH, calcium, stabilizer, etc.)
- A horizontal 2” or 2.5” return line section, at least 16" long
Installation Steps
1. Water Chemistry First
We test and balance the water—checking calcium hardness, pH, stabilizer (CYA), and salt levels. Poor water chemistry can ruin the system and void your warranty.
2. Pipe Prep
We select a straight, horizontal pipe section after all pool equipment (filter, heater, etc.), then cut a 14.5” gap for the chlorinator cell.
3. Install the Cell
The cell is cemented in place with union fittings and aligned with the correct flow direction. We ensure no leaks and let the cement dry completely.
4. Electrical Setup
Our licensed team wires the TruClear XL to a GFCI-protected breaker and bonds it to your existing pool equipment ground. It’s always interlocked with the pool pump—so it only runs when water is flowing.
5. Salt Addition
If needed, we add high-purity, non-iodized salt (≥99.8% NaCl) directly into the pool—not through the skimmer—and circulate the system for even mixing.
6. Startup & Configuration
Once salinity is confirmed, we power on the chlorinator, set the chlorine output (typically 40–60%), and educate you on how to monitor and maintain it weekly.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Jandy TruClear XL Salt Chlorinator?+
It’s a pool sanitizing system that converts salt into chlorine, helping keep water clean and safe without handling harsh chemicals.
Do I need to balance my pool water before installation?+
Yes. The water must meet minimum standards for salt, pH, stabilizer, and hardness before installing the system.
Does the system run 24/7?+
No. It should only run when the pool pump is running. The system is interlocked with the pump to prevent dry operation.
Can I install it myself?+
No. Jandy requires the unit to be installed by a licensed pool professional to keep your warranty valid.
Can the TruClear XL be used in stand-alone spas?+
No, it is designed for permanent pools or built-in spas only.
What are the installation requirements?+
The salt cell must be the last device on the return line, installed horizontally, and bonded and grounded properly.
What tools do I need to install the system?+
PVC cutters, drill, CPVC cement, voltage meter, screwdrivers, and proper bonding tools are required.
What’s the minimum water flow needed for operation?+
A minimum of 30 gallons per minute (GPM) is required.
What salt level is recommended for the system?+
A minimum of 3000 ppm (parts per million) of salt is needed.
Can the system run in cold water?+
No. The system should not operate below 55°F (13°C) to avoid damaging the cell.
How do I winterize the salt system?+
Shut off the chlorinator and switch to traditional chlorine. You can also use a winterizing kit.
How do I know if my salt level is too low?+
The unit will display a red "Low Salt" light if the salt level drops below operating range.
What is BOOST mode?+
BOOST mode temporarily increases chlorine output for shock treatments or after heavy pool usage.
What is LOW mode?+
LOW mode decreases output when the pool requires minimal chlorine generation.
How often should I check the cell for cleaning?+
Visually inspect the cell monthly and clean it only when scaling is visible.
What is polarity reversal?+
Polarity reversal automatically switches current direction in the cell to reduce scale buildup.
Can I over-clean the cell?+
Yes. Acid cleaning too frequently can reduce the life of the cell.
How do I clean the cell?+
Soak the cell in a 4:1 water-to-acid solution until foaming stops, then rinse thoroughly.
What does “No Flow” mean?+
The system is not detecting enough water movement. Check the pump and plumbing for blockages or air.
What does the green “Flow” light mean?+
Water flow is sufficient, and the system is operating normally.
Can I use bromine with this system?+
No. Using bromine or non-compatible chemicals will void the warranty and damage the system.
What size pools can the TruClear XL support?+
It is designed for pools up to 45,000 gallons.
What does the red “Check Salt” light mean?+
It indicates that the salt level is too low and must be replenished before the system will generate chlorine.
Can I run the system without salt?+
No. Salt is essential for the chlorinator to generate chlorine.
